"U Make Me Feel" by MK2
Lucy is adorable.
13 ghosts is among my favs💔💔
The guy pointing in the thumbnail looks so familiar but I can't remember what movie he's from
welcome to the asthma club
I actually think a Back to the Future remake would be cool. It would be fun to see a teen from the social media era go back to the 80’s. I’m also 20 and didn’t grow up watching the original so I don’t have the nostalgia for it like most.
What movie is that for the thumbnail??
I'm a bit late to your question, but it's Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Remakes to me are different versions of the same story that use a different path to get to the same destination. The best remakes for me often times exceed the original. The 2 best examples of this are Halloween 2018 and it 2017.
I am very late to this episode but the poltergeist remake did not include the fun and excitement of discovering something weird was going on in the house that was in the original, so for me it didn't have the same heart.
What is the movie in the thumbnail?

The irony at 2:04, stating that remakes are "not a new thing" :). But seriously fascinating discussion; I was struck early on by the similarity between movies remakes and music covers - especially that concept that the original is immediately deemed "better". There are so many times a musician will take an inferior piece and draw something new and better out of it. Thanks for this, guys!
isn't the 1999 the rage: carrie 2 basically a remake?
The Halloween Rob Zombie remake is interesting because it does something different, I just don’t like what it does
You know what makes Evil Dead a good remake, I refused to watch it cause it looked way too scary for me at the time XD
The shinning remake best mini series ever!!! Shelly Duval SUCKER in the Kubrick adaptation
I just feel vindicated that someone else can't stop gushing about how perfect Shelley Duvall was as Olive Oyl. The film is absolutely bonkers in a lot of not great ways, but my god her in that role is the most perfect casting choice I've ever seen in film.
I had to skip the part where they talked about suspira because I’ve started watching it but I haven’t been able to finish watching it😭
Exqueeze me? Planet of the Apes is totally a horror series if you have pithecophobia, as I do.
Don’t mind me just rewatching this podcast for my English assignment
What is life
Is this a podcast or debate
"The Invisible Man is the best recent movie remake." ...IT tho
New series idea! Remake vs. Original comparison- similar to the Cut Comparison.
One of honorable mention. Let The Right One In, amazing horror. Top notch in every way. Let Me In, the American remake, not amazing, but a solid horror no less. (It is a book, so technically you could call it an adaptation, but I think it was built on the cult following of the Russian Film so i'd call it a Murican remake)
Evil Dead remake is probably my favorite. It did something drastically different and it was balls-to-the-wall pants-shittingly scary. You can even forgive it for not having Ash in it (at least not until the post credits)
the 4K version of Alien looks almost like a new movie when you are in the darker scenes but in the lighter ones (which there arent too many clumped together) you can see the film grain it blew me away and it was the same when i watched other films in 4k like Labyrinth you notice so much more its insane id recommend anyone who has 4k TVs start getting older films in 4K and just reliving a amazing experience for what feels like the first time
imagine someone trying to remake jaws, i just can’t imagine that at all
there are some movies that are remakes but arent really remakes like same story but new characters that were not in the original.
BRO WE OPENED THE SAME DRINK AT THE SAME TIME😂😂😭😭
I took a semester of a film & lit class my senior year of high school. Absolutely loved it, wished I had taken the whole year. I love listening to this podcast because of how much research Chelsea puts into the topics and I get to learn so much history about film!
I loved 13 ghosts especially all the lore and stuff in the bonus features
My favorite quote about funny games: I was told these games would be funny.
If James ever does the ring or grudge movies, I hope he doesn’t splinter the Japanese and American movies into different series.
I don't understand the issue people have with remakes. At all. Some of my favourite movies have been remade, with varying results, and I couldn't care less. The original movie exists and so does my love for those movies. Honestly, it's that simple. Why complicate things? Movies are a business. I do have an issue with the original movie being pulled from distribution, much like bands who remaster a classic album, then pull the original album from distribution. Otherwise, my feelings aren't hurt by a studio remaking and continuing to make money from a property that - surprise - they own.
First I was just watching the kill counts just cause like you know I’d like to kill counts and I can see you like the podcast pop by once once a while and I never watched it cause I thought I was going to be boring but damn when I clicked on that video oh my God I will be watching this every single day now I’m going through all of them like I really thought it was going to be a boring but like this really gives you more detail into movies and more information I just love you so much Hell I might even like it more than the kill counts
1:10:31 wait, which remake is he referring to when he says it's a fine remake with weird behind-the-scenes stuff?
I really liked the hills have eyes remake
Okay I'll bite, how exactly do you improve Psycho?
if they were to remake Back to the future, as a huge fan, I would be so offended, like there is only one Marty Mcfly, Micheal J. Fox AND there is only one Dr. Emmet Brown, Cristopher Lloyd. End of story.
Evil Dead Remake. That movie terrified me as little kid(like 6 or 7) I remember sitting on my couch alone in the dark late at night just staring at that girl in the cellar singing that song. I can barely look at it 7 years later.
Remaking movies that were average or preformed poorly but had a great concept has always been an appealing idea for me. Sometimes a move is OK/good but the SFX at the time were awful or the actors weren't right. Take Island of Dr Moreau - great concept about science going to far and playing god, Cast was awful, production was crappy etc. a lot of fertile ground here IMO
I watched all nightmare on elm street movies and I like the remake way better than the original
I'm surprised you guys didn't go into the Hammer Horror "remakes" from the 50s/60s and Universal's own remake of Dracula in 1979.
there are some remakes that are excellent.
I like a lot of horror movie remakes, like Evil Dead, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, but more often we get movies like Carrie 2013, Nightmare on Elm Street 2010 and Psycho 1998. Still, I like watching new takes on movies, even if they aren't as good.
I personally love the Platinum Dunes movies because of how dark they were compared to the originals. R. Lee Ermie, may he rest in peace, was a wonderfully disgusting Sheriff Hoyt. Andrew Bryniarski was, in my opinion, the most terrifying as Leatherface. Jackie Earle Haley added a much more sinister tone to the toonish Freddy while also keeping that the character cracked jokes that didn't always land. And Friday the 13th had an absolutely terrifying Jason who set traps, could run for a change, and outsmarted the kids. And of course, you have the gore, which was helped by the releases of Saw and Hostel. The main characters were the only thing that couldn't care less about. While I watched them for the kills and the killers, I had a hard time trying to give a shit about the teens being killed. Sorry if this felt like I was ranting, but I felt the need to say something, unlike what Michael Myers should never do, about the PD remakes.
Surprised Dawn of the Dead didn't get mentioned, definitely one of my favorite horror remakes
I would have enjoyed the Nightmare on Elm Street remake much better if they did lean into him being innocent of the alleged crimes.
You ever talk about "scary movie" on the podcast
Really have to disagree with you re the Evil Dead remake. The astounding stupidity of that moron who so willfully ignored ALL OF THE WARNINGS just took me out of it. At least in the original it was more accidental and you actually felt for the characters. Also, the Poltergeist remake is one of the worst films I've ever seen (right up there with Rise of Skywalker and A Cure For Wellness). Fwah!!!
I know I'm really late to the part on this one, but I wanted to talk about my favorite horror movie very briefly. In my opinion, it's not only the greatest horror movie of all times but The Fly from 1986 is one of the greatest movies ever. The Fly takes a brilliant concept that has been around since 1957 and "modernizes" it perfectly. Although the remake was directly inspired by the film adaptation from 1958, it borrows the general story from the 1957 short story. The Fly 1986 is a beautiful film with an amazing soundtrack, great visuals, incredible special effects, and oscar worthy performances from the cast. As a remake, it succeeds in telling a very different story from the original film while keeping the premise the same. It gets everything that it needs to right while changing anything else it can. It was also one of the only remakes I can think of to receive the type of praise it has form those involved in the original movie. Although The Fly co-star Vincent Price found the 1986 film a bit too disturbing, the lead actor and title character of the original move David Hedison loved the 1986 remake. He said it was the film he wished he could have made back in the 1950s. And if the film is good enough to get the stamp of approval from the original Fly, it's good enough for me to credit as being the superior film out of the two. David Hedison liked Jeff Goldblum's performance as Seth Brundle, The Fly, so much that he nominated Goldblum for an academy award. Both films are classics, but the 1986 movie is a masterpiece. I highly recommend both versions and just wanted to point out how perfect The Fly is for creature feature summer!
Love Lucy!
I think a movie people cannot touch is train to busan It's a great movie and seriously deserves more than it gets. Like people remaking train to busan is like people trying to remake the mona lisa. Of course train to busan can use work but it's not god awful. It's one of those movies that you just can't touch without getting shat on.
just me or do james and chelsea look like there falling in love all over again every time they do a podcast
A good Psycho remake is Bates Motel.
The omen isn't a horrible example. I actually like the remake.
The remade Carrie may have been a miss for her, but Chloe Grace Moretz did do a great job in one of my personal favorite “remakes” Let Me In, which I think in a rare instance, in my opinion, is better than its source material, even more impressive being an american remake
What? Cat butt
Chelsea, your makeup always looks amazing! Your eye shadow is poppin'! Way to look fabulous while also providing excellent film criticism and analysis! If you did a makeup tutorial, I would watch the hell out of it! I'm always looking for makeup looks that I can do in like 5 minutes after hitting snooze like three times. Since you guys are busy running a business, I'm guessing you're a master of quick makeup routines.
My favorite remake is Long Dong Silver: Deep Sea Sluts and the search for Big Booty, The actors in the remake are a lot better.
the FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot was really good and so enjoyable. My favorite reboot along side CHILDS PLAY and THE CRAZIES
The Blob is one of my favorite remakes.
Friday the 13th (2009) is one of my favorites, for sure. Partially because I had such a genuinely fun time going to see it (saw it at the drive-in with my bestie), partly because I was really excited to see Jared Padalecki in a movie I could watch (House of Wax is too much for me, I don't care how bad people say it is). But also, it's a fun slasher movie. I like the change in Jason from the others. Evil Dead was good too, but again too much for me. I felt pretty uneasy after watching it, but have been kind of been wanting to watch it again recently. And I just saw the Child's Play remake last weekend and was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it! But I don't know how much of that has to do with the originals not doing much for me. They've always been just okay to me. So this was a nice change, in my opinion. But I can understand why people may not have been happy about it. IDK, I used to be pretty against remakes even without having seen them. In the last few years, I've started being excited when I hear about them. They might not be great, but the original is still there to enjoy if that's the case, you know? More movies means more happy! :D
I unfortunately can't think about the topic of remakes that much without descending into PTSD fueled rage and depression because I used to spend a lot of time making Warcraft 3 custom maps.
I'm genuinely surprised you didn't like 13 Ghosts. Most horror fans I've seen love that film. I also love the remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm St. They are all entertaining films. They just get compared to the originals too often. If the originals didn't exist, would those films get nearly as much shit? Also, I love gore. People think not showing it is scarier. I disagree. I watch a horror movie to SEE it, not imagine it. If I wanted that, I wouldn't even watch a movie. I'd just imagine whatever the hell I wanted.
You said that an audience member can't disengage their preconceived ideas based around the original. I disagree. I ALWAYS separate the original from the remake. I judge the remake as its own film. That is probably why I love so many remakes. Many even more than the originals. Here's the thing: If a remake sucks, it can be ignored. If it's awesome then you have another version of a film you love. It gives people options. I dislike the original Halloween, but enjoy Zombie's remake. And if you love the original AND love the remake then you have multiple versions of films you love. There is no downside to remakes in my view. They can also make people aware of an original film they may not have known existed. Also, people claiming they want more originality, there is a TON of original films being made. They aren't that hard to find. There are far more original films than remakes.
No Hills Have Eyes remake love? That movie was hands down the best horror remake up until Friday the 13th and Evil Dead. That ending fight scene always gives me goosebumps.
Heh Heh 1000 comments thanks to me
Most pointless remake for me was Quarantine. Its a shot for shot Version of Rec. Even the Dialogue is exactly the same.
but that was from a financal standpoint to introduce it to Usa audience. besides that it is entierly pointless
I’m sorry but who is the guy in the thumbnail and where is he from? It’s such an iconic image it seems but I’ve never found out where it’s from, thanks a ton even if you don’t respond. Also yet again another great video love watching these and the Kill Count, keep up the great work!
I love the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. It’s the first “proper” horror movie that I loved and got me into horror. Rewatching it, yeah I can see why others don’t like it. But without this movie I never would have gotten into the horror genre as much as I have.
Guys, remake Psycho starring the two of you! ;0; And Lucy.
Ор
Imagine if they remake Shawn shank redemption or like goodfellas🤔
I liked the Psycho remake, just purely because i saw it before I saw the original. I dont normally like remakes because 9/10 ive seen the original first..... so if u see the remake first its probably more likely you will enjoy that before the original, no? And by the way Hollowman was never brought up during the invisible man discussion, because FUCK ME Hollowman trumps any invisible man movie- EVER
I know they're not horror movies but I would LOVE to see you guys cover the Planet of the Apes movies!
I think Hollywood's willingness since the 90s to make movies with broadly similar plots and premises to old movies but with different settings and tones has actually really cooled off how many remakes we get. Anyways, best horror remakes: The Thing, Evil Dead 2, Night and Dawn both had great remakes, and I'm a big fan of the US version of The Ring if it counts as a remake.
He may have answered this at some point and I just don't remember but are we ever going to get those comparison kill counts where James goes in depth on the differences between original and remakr? I liked those videos.
Isnt John carpenters the thing a remake of thing from another World ??
no evil dead ?
they did say evil dead
All three Carrie movies have Carrie on that stage (in the book she's outside, looking through a window). Can't blame them, though: it's a a much better iconic scene.
I think there's a difference between a remake and a reinterpretation.
I've had a cough for 5 years
Cornetto trilogy I think is an interesting in-between of parody and arguably remake territory where Shawn of the dead is a comical retelling of zombie movies with actual horror and danger throughout along with the world's end although that is even more of a comedy. Ultimately I'd be interested to see or hear Chelsea and James's opinions on the trilogy if any.
can anyone tag the time where they talk about suspiria for 10 seconds
I really love the 2017 IT remake because I just think it was a wonderfully produced movie and added some interesting things to the original tv miniseries.
James can you rank the remakes off the movies that you kill count from worst to best
The Hills Have Eyes Remake i think is just as amazing as Texas Chainsaw remake
The cabin fever remake uses the same script as the original
I read “remakes” as “pancakes” at first and was really confused
would you guys be able to do a review on Contagion or possibly about virus-themed movies?
I had two watch both versions of The Man Who Knew To Much in a college class based around Hitchcock, and I can honestly say that the difference between the two was really impressive.
This podcast was really helpful! I just did a paper on Horror remakes and having the sources really helped!
Lucy is the best, I swear (don't let my cats know I said that pls).
The Imitation of Life remake is better than the original. The original still had a bad depiction of blacks the remake was made in the time of MLK
Are you guys out of your minds?! The Evil dead remake is the largest pile of shit remakes out there. I can not believe you think otherwise. I am so disappointed to hear that anyone liked it in the first place but to make that as a statement yikes. You didn't even talk about House on the left remake, smh.
I steel dont get why pepol remake A movie that all ready made
I think the Hills Have Eyes remake may be better than the original. Also the Dawn of The Dead remake isnt the worst thing I've ever seen.
