Jump Scares (Dead Meat Podcast #72)

BOO! James and Chelsea talk the art of the jump scare. If you're watching the video version of this, there will be lots of clips of jump scares with NO SOUND (to avoid the audio-only version of the podcast being a bunch of loud sounds with no visual context). If you don't want scares from movies you haven't seen spoiled, consider this your heads-up.

  • I like the vocab differences between my understandings of horror and these kind of established tropes. Like the "fridge-scare" is a "locker-scare" to me since I watched a lot of child and teen content as well as horror movies and overlapping when possible as a kid. So the horror trope, combined with fictional high school tropes becomes the well known classic of "hot/dangerous(?) guy that's right up in our lead girl's face the second she closes her locker at school". The scares are the same structurally and the tone of the scare depends on the piece.

  • The first jump scare I can remember being startled by was in the first X-Men when Wolverine stabs Storm but actually it’s mystique in disguise. But the scariest one is in Mulholland Drive, the Diner Dream sequence. Because it basically tells you that it is going to scare you and has a slow painful build-up and then Bang!

  • With the Doctor Strange sequel, honestly, you could just watch the first movie and you'll be fine. The character is very new for the MCU, relatively speaking, so it's not one where you HAVE to see the entire MCU to be caught up.

  • Signs. I know everyone recalls the the birthday party footage, but the one that got me was in the basement, when the arm grabs the boy, sending him into an asthma attack. The jump scares that have always got me the most, are ones where the future scary thing is already in the frame, but blending in somehow, and then it moves. Those scare me more than most typical jump scares

  • The scariest things I've ever seen was the Insidious red face jump scare and the scene from Annabelle when she's in the basement and has to run up the stairs, and she looks back down the dark stairs and a demon is just sitting on the stairs. The Insidious one made me turn off the movie because it got me so damn hard, and I saw Annabelle in theaters so I had to watch and that shot of the demon on the stairs felt like it took 15 seconds to pass even though it was like 2.

  • A couple of underrated jump scares (two of which are in non-horror films/TV but totally work as horror-esque jump scares): The Dark Knight- the fake Batman is hung outside the mayor’s window as he looks outside of it (also the end fight where the Joker lunges from the shadows-shown from Batman’s direct POV) The Sopranos- Paulie sees the Virgin Mary in the Bing Mulholland Drive- the thing behind the diner appears Wait Until Dark- Alan Arkin lunges from shadows Texas Chainsaw MassacreII- Leatherface shows up in radio station

  • The best jumpscare in my opinion is the Hospital scene from The Excorcist III, it generates tension by stillness and silence, basically the opposite of John Carpenters methods of movement and motion to generate tension. Also the jumpscare occurs while the victim is exiting the scene instead of the horror cliche of it occurring when shes entering the room, that's why the Hospital scare of The Excorcist III is special and legendary.😨

  • dude i hate insidious purely because of that fuckin jumpscare. I loved everything about that movie until they showed me the monster and i lost all desire to continue watching it. I legitimately was not only not scared by it, i was so massively disappointed in how it looked that i paused the movie and went like out and did shit and then came back and finished the movie.

    StudiousDewshStudiousDewsh6 mánuðum síðan
    • Let me add on to say that I am so very rarely afraid of ANYTHING in horror movies because I spent a lot of my childhood playing horror games and those immersed me more than most every movie that i've ever watched so games flat our RUINED movies for me in the horror genre. A good example is a do not think that any of the alien movies are scary, same with the predator movies, but Alien: Isolation is one of the scariest fucking games ever to me and playing as a human in the Alien vs Predator video games freaked me out because I'm able to immerse myself in these worlds. So Insidious got me really hardcore immersed and had so much suspense built up in me that when i got to that jumpscare and it was just a dude that looked like darth maul with a stupid hairdo i was so mad.

      StudiousDewshStudiousDewsh6 mánuðum síðan
  • My 2 best "jump scares" are probably 1. The tongue click sound that happens randomly in the car and 2. A still picture suddenly moving when the character is looking away. Always creeps me out.

  • For me a horror movie is not about jumpscares, it´s about the fright building up and getting nervous and scared and actually feeling with the character and the atmopshere. i find jumpscares interesting and some are so fucking scary but it´s not what it´s making a movie.

Also it happens as soon as I was like "huh I guess there is no-Fuck oh wow that actually got me Jump Scares almost never get me very well done"...
