  • It makes fun of the extremists on both left and right. Like how they don't fact check a lot of the time, which is mostly shown in the ending. In the end, Hillary's character basically blames the deplorables they had hunted for, "Making it true", when in reality, she could have just ignored their conspiracies and moved on with her life. But her character chose to do it and refuses to take responsibility for her own actions. I feel like Betty's character is supposed to be a centrist, or rather, your everyday, non-political person. But it is also sort of revealed during the scene where they choose who to hunt, the pic of JusticeForYall is clearly taken by someone who is pulling the finger at Crystal, so it could be that she is the real JusticeForYall, or that the real JusticeForYall chose to use that photo of Crystal to cover their true identity. The movie is also about how people on both extremes can't seem to take a joke, or they take things too literally and generally only tend to believe other people or news media that is on the same side as they are.

  • This podcast is ancient at this point and maybe this has been addressed a lot in the comments but I just saw the movie and finally listened to this. I took Betty Gilpin's character saying she wasn't Justice4Yall as more of an indictment of political extremists (which the hunters definitely are but it's certainly not just on one side in real life) and how they're so willing to accomplish what they want that they don't really care who gets hurt along the way. This was best illustrated to me by Hillary Swank not even pretending to be sorry for the mixup and only offering a "Whoops!" before she died.

  • This movie glorifies violence towards conservatives as I've seen. Being killed by elite liberals (lmao since when they handle weapons) for not being in the right agenda. Oh what a shocker this would be if the roles were inversed.

  • With regard to how the movie characterized Krystal, she not being who Athena thought she was, I kinda interpreted that to signify that she represented most people (whether they lean conservative or liberal). In other words, every other character in the movie represents a farcical extreme of American political culture ( liberal or conservative). Krystal is just trying to survive the chaos/destruction wrought by both sides of the political spectrum.

  • Great podcast ep, however I think you guys were missing the point about Betty Gilpins character. The reason they have her not be who Hilary Swank thinks she is at the end is to show not to type cast or judge people based on your own personal assumptions without really knowing them. That and the fact that throughout the movie Betty Gilpin is the only one who seems uninterested in a political side, she makes no comment when ppl bring up why the "liberal elite" are doing what they are and doesn't even care why they're trying to kill her just that they are and focusing on the more important task of simply surviving. I get what you guys are saying about the fact that we still should be able to root for her if she turned out to be conservative and I agree but the point was to show she's the only one whose independent or it doesn't matter what she is as she's not following extremes on either side which can be dangerous and doesn't solve anything as everyones dead at the end besides her. I would say that is the point of the film imo. Also btw I thought she (Gilpin) was the jack rabbit who always wins as she does at the end after she kills Swank and in the story the jack rabbit eats the turtles food and then she eats the grill cheese Swank made as well.

  • When it comes to the ending I'm surprised you guys didn't like that she wasn't the right person. Athena only put her in the hunt because she was personally pissed by the real woman's post about her. Athena was so blind with rage she didn't notice the profile pic was our Crystal being flipped off by the other woman. She also didn't realize that our Crystal didn't have any track marks, while the other Crystal was a heavy drug user. Also our Crystal was in the military, like Athena was just super incompetent because she was blinded by rage.

  • It’s extremely fine! 😂 I agree, the film was missing a few things and actually should have further made fun of both sides in a complex way. It had potential but failed to stick the landing. I did like how she knew Animal Farm and was likely a common sense middle man.

  • When the elites were choosing who to hunt, they said how two of the elites were at therapy sad for losing jobs. So I think Don may have been the husband. And Crystal might have been Justice4yall. I liked that element because it makes us think of people as individuals and not as the two categories. We liked them for who they are even though they may have been seen as the villain to either sides perspective.

  • I feel like the controversy was detrimental to the movie. I get that it gave it publicity, but I think watching a movie without expecting anything is always better, which is sometimes hard to do nowadays. I feel like what anyone's ever talking about while reviewing this movie is the controversy. It may take away from the actual movie. I didn't know anything about the movie going in and loved it. Tonally I felt it was similar to the final scene in Ready or Not. Except the entire movie us like that. And the visual comedy is spectacular, almost Edgar Wright level (especially thanks to Betty Gilpin's performance). I haven't laughed that much during a movie in a while. Very fun, very fast paced movie. My favourite film of the year so far.

  • Watchmen is actually my favorite graphic novel AND my favorite Superhero movie. I think Zack Snider nailed it and I'm not even a fan of Zack Snider. The movie changed what needed to be changed and updated what had to be updated. Its certainly not perfect and handled a few things in the graphic novel poorly, but overall it's great. I loved the book since I first read it in Highschool in the mid 90s and when they announced the movie I was PISSED cause I was 100% certain they'd fuck it up and "Hollywoodize" it, and when Alan Moore refused to endorse it I streight up boycotted the film and unfairly judged it. A couple years later, long after it came out on Blu-ray, i was talking to my brother on the phone and the movie came up. He found out I refused to see it and him also being a HUGE fan of the graphic novel said "Wait! WHAT?!? You haven't seen it? Its AWESOME". I then decided to give it shot with VERY low expectations and I came out absolutely LOVING the movie

But I really enjoyed it and thought it was a lot of fun, lots of creepy imagery and disturbing and interesting scenes and I am dying to hear you discuss it. It's not some cinematic masterpiece but I think there's enough there to make a review and whether you hate the movie or love it I really just want to hear you talk about it!! If you have the chance to squeeze it in somewhere, I would cry haha. Thank you regardless, for giving me plenty of bonus podcasts and kill counts to enjoy while we're all at home! • I had never heard of The Hunt before watching it and was shocked when the political angle was revealed. Discovering the plot as it unfolded made it difficult at first to shake out which side held which politics but I immediately assumed neither side would win. I expected there to be a more unifying (or at least more neutral) ending. Without time beforehand to form any expectations the end worked for me because the final girl didn't show allegiance to either side, the point was that she wasn't a buffoonish caricature. I still read her as right leaning.
